🚇 Getting around Rome
Metro, buses, tickets, taxis and the city at night — what you actually need.
The network in short
Three metro lines cover the key spots: line A (red) for the Vatican, Piazza di Spagna and Termini; line B (blue) for the Colosseum and Piramide; line C (green) for San Giovanni and Lodi. Change at Termini (A+B), San Giovanni (A+C) and Colosseo (B+C). Buses and trams complete the network, with one ticket system (Metrebus) valid on everything.
🕐 Metro: first train 5:30 AM, last 11:30 PM — until 1:30 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.
🎫 Tickets and passes
- BIT — 100 minutes from validation; unlimited buses and trams, one metro ride€1,50
- Roma 24H — 24 hours, unlimited travel€8,50
- Roma 48H — 48 hours€15
- Roma 72H — 72 hours€22
- CIS — 7 days€29
Prices checked in August 2026.
Which one to pick? 2 nights: single tickets or contactless card. 3 nights: Roma 72H if you expect 5+ rides a day. 5 nights or more: the weekly CIS is almost always the right choice.
Contactless at the gates (Tap&Go). At metro gates and on contactless validators on buses and trams you can simply tap your card or phone: you pay a €1.50 ticket (100 minutes) without buying anything. Keep using the same card and after a few rides in a day the daily cap kicks in automatically.
Where to buy. Tobacconists and newsstands, machines in metro stations, apps (MooneyGo, DropTicket, Telepass). On buses and trams paper tickets must always be validated, even if already used in the metro: travelling unvalidated means a €100 fine (about €50 if paid within 5 days).
🌙 At night
When the metro closes, the night lines ("n") take over: nMA, nMB and nMC follow the three metro routes every 8–10 minutes, plus some twenty more lines on the main corridors. Regular tickets are valid.
🚕 Taxis
Official taxis are white, with the licence number on the doors and a meter; a receipt is your right. Minimum fare €9.
From the airports, all-inclusive flat fares apply to the historic centre: €55 from Fiumicino, €40 from Ciampino. All our apartments are inside the Aurelian Walls: these exact fares apply to you.
Call the city number 060609, the radio taxi lines (06 3570, 06 4994) or use the FreeNow and appTaxi apps; or go to the ranks marked by the orange TAXI post.
⚠️ At Termini and the airports, never accept rides from people approaching you ("taxi? taxi?"): a real taxi waits in line at the official rank and uses the meter or the legal flat fares.
🚧 Until autumn 2026 the trams (lines 3, 5, 14, 19) are replaced by buses on the same routes due to network works.
